Social Studies - Upper - From Sea to Shining Sea (S1)

Overview
Early Exploration of America: Come learn about early explorers who sailed the seas to discover new lands. Learn about how they navigated with maps and tools, why they were looking for new lands, and the challenges they faced while exploring. Learn about who they discovered was already living in these “new lands,” and the good and bad relationships that developed between these groups of people. A work sample opportunity will be provided. Recommended for grades 4-5th, but all students are welcome.

Students will learn place value through millions and decimals through thousandths, comparing numbers through millions, rounding, and word problems. Exploring Informational Text- Help your student build better reading skills with this fun, interactive course all about analyzing the structure of informational/nonfiction texts. This is all about Reading to learn and strengthening comprehension skills. A work sample opportunity will be provided. This class is intended for grades 4 and 5, but all students are welcome.

Students will explore how our Earth changes due to erosion and weathering. We will also explore how the 4 Earth Systems are a part of this process. With interactive and hands-on activities students will have a lot to share about our ever-changing planet.

Enrichment - Upper - The Language of Art: Elements of Art Education & Practice (S1)

Overview
During our 5 weeks together, we will learn about the different elements of art. What is art? Why and how is it created? We will then participate in a variety of art activities that will highlight the different elements of art we have learned about. We will travel to Russia as we learn about the beautiful St. Basil's Cathedral and then over to Japan as we learn about the Great Wave of Hokusai. We will connect the elements of art we have learned about and practice using them as we create our own St. Basil's Cathedral and Great Wave pieces of art. It will be a fun and educational art journey. I can’t wait to see you in class as we kick off the new school year with some learning and fun. These Elevate classes will build on one another, so please try to come to each of the classes. A work sample opportunity will be provided. This class is intended for grades 4 and 5, but all students are welcome.

Okay, not the ride at Disneyland California Adventure but still just as fun as we learn about early California History/Exploration. Come join us as we spend the month soaring over the early history of our amazing state. We’ll learn about Native Americans, explorers, missions, physical geography and more! A work sample opportunity will be provided. Recommended for grades 4-5th, but all students are welcome.
